The Ghanaian team’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Egypt in their second Group B match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was marred by mistakes, according to coach Chris Hughton.
Following their defeat in their opening match against Cape Verde, Ghana played with great energy as Mohammed Kudus made a comeback from injury to score two goals to support the team.
But Egypt took advantage to tie the score thanks to a careless back pass from Inaki Williams and more shoddy play from his replacement, Osman Bukari.
After the game, Hughton said that although these kinds of things happen in sports, it was unfortunate that his team allowed goals because of them.
He states that the goal is to reduce these mistakes and produce favorable outcomes moving forward.
“As a coach of a group of players, you feel frustrated because, in performance, mistakes in the game are part of the game, and you hope you make fewer mistakes than the others,” he stated following the match.
Teams can commit a lot of errors, but the opposition doesn’t always take advantage of them. Regretfully, the opposition was able to take advantage of the mistakes we made today.
But [it’s] a necessary component of the game, we must concede. You must make an effort to reduce the number of mistakes you make.
Naturally, the team with the best chance of winning is the one that limits it the most,” he continued. The Black Stars’ current priority is defeating Mozambique in their third and final group match on Monday.
