“We didn’t discuss seeking spiritual assistance” – Kasoa teenager tells court

The 18-year-old who was detained in the Kasoa murder case has refuted reports that he and the 15-year-old accused talked about how to turn to spiritual support to live comfortably.

The 18-year-old refuted reports that the 15-year-old spent the night at his house on April 4, 2021, and talked about how hard it was to make ends meet due to a lack of money.

The 18-year-old accused denies any discussion about how to consult a spiritualist in Amasaman, in the Greater Accra Region, to make living more pleasant.

The eighteen-year-old accused said, in response to questions during further cross-examination on Monday at the High Court, that he had told the fifteen-year-old first accused that he was going to his hometown for Easter celebrations, and that was the only information that was discussed.

The two youths are accused of plotting and killing 11-year-old Ishmael Mensah Abdallah on April 3, 2021, in Kasoa.

“We never discussed anything about seeking spiritual help,” he told the Court presided over by Mrs Justice Lydia Osei-Marfo.

“The truth I know about this case is what I’m telling the court,” he stressed and denied the Investigation Caution Statement dated April 4, 2021, in which he allegedly told the 15-year-old minor that if the Amasaman spiritualist could not help, then he would be sending him to his hometown in the Volta region.

The 18-year-old told the judge that the State Prosecutor’s audio recording of his talk with the 15-year-old juvenile would be aired in court if it existed.

“I’m stating that I didn’t talk to anyone about the Amasaman spiritualist. For this reason, I also contend that playing the audio is necessary for the truth to be revealed. I didn’t have a phone or other device to record anything at the time this problem happened.”

The 18-year-old accused person insisted, “It is not true that we both planned to visit a fetish priest to seek spiritual powers and to acquire wealth.”

The accused denied knowing that the deceased’s close friend was a 15-year-old juvenile.

“I know the deceased (Ishmael) lived in the same area as the first accused person, the 15-year-old boy, but I’m not sure if they were close friends.”

The prosecution: “I put it to you that you planned, and that wasn’t the first time you’ve successfully planned and executed a murder.”

“I know nothing about what you are saying,” said the second accused. You also claim that this is not the first time we have planned a murder; if you have any proof to provide the court, please do so, as I am not aware of it.”

The case will now take place on February 14, 2024.
