“We can’t count on “God bless you” to pay bills” says Obaapa Christy

Obaapa Christy says she is fully in favor of gospel artists getting paid for their services. Discussions over whether or not to charge for their performances have taken place.

Obaapa Christy claims that, similar to secular artists, gospel performers face significant production expenses and, as a result, are unable to make ends meet by singing “God Bless You” to cover these expenditures and the ongoing expenses of their performances.

“Yes, we need to get compensated for our services, whether they are provided at a church or anywhere else, as we also need to pay bills and other obligations. Backing vocalists, studio costs, and other expenses are not included. She questioned, “If we give our services away for free, how can we continue to fulfill our obligations since we paid for them?”

On Thursday, February 1, Obaapa Christy released a new song titled “Ebesesa.” Translating to “it will change” in Akan, the song inspires listeners to persevere through any challenges they may be facing.

“We are in hard times and people are going through a lot. After COVID-19, a lot has changed and most people are not having it easy at all. This song which is accompanied by a video shot by Skyweb in Ghana gives hope to the hopeless. The lyrics are encouraging to make you know God is with you and will change your situation for you” she added.

Obaapa Christy has a long list of hits to her name. She celebrated her 20 years in the gospel music business with a performance last year. Among them are Mesuafre Awurade, Bo Abrabo Papa, Wagye Me, W’ asue Me, Hyebre Sesafo, Destiny Changer, Woa Maa, and The Glory.

At the 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), Obaapa Christy took home the Best Female Vocal Performance, Gospel Artiste of the Year, and Best Collaboration of the Year awards.
