We can’t be blamed for Akosombo dam spillage – Ghana Meteo insists

The Akosombo dam spill tragedy, which resulted in the displacement of over 30,000 people in September 2023, has been blamed for nothing by the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA).

Following the occurrence, doubts were expressed about the efficiency of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and GMA data-sharing mechanism.

But Agency Director-General Eric Asuman stood up for the GMA, saying they had given the VRA the required rainfall data.

According to Mr. Asuman, the GMA’s prognosis had called for rainfall that was above average, providing ample time for planning and taking preventative action.

“Our forecast said that we would experience above-average weather. That was early enough for everyone to observe, be ready, and take the required safety measures. The lack of information from GMA could not have been the cause. When we did, word leaked out that we were the ones at fault. The appropriate individuals at VRA will inform you that it was not possible for GMA to be the issue,” he remarked.
