Syms was born on January 6, 1934, in London. She was one of hundreds of kids who were evacuated from London at the age of five, first to Kent and then, in 1940, to Monmouthshire.
Later, when Sylvia was just twelve years old, she recalled the anguish of being separated from her mother, who would pass away from a brain tumor.
She had a nervous breakdown and considered suicide when she was 16 years old, but her stepmother insisted that she get counseling, which helped her get over the crisis.
She attended Rada Drama School because she wanted to be an actress, and there she was awarded both an HM Tenants Award and the Gerald Lawrence Scholarship.
Was Sylvia Syms in any Carry On films?
The charming actress Sylvia Syms never actually featured in a Carry On movie, but she was very near by participating in the 1965 comedy The Big Job opposite Sid James, Joan Sims, and Jim Dale. However, Sylvia was excellent in that movie, making me wonder why she didn’t appear in another Peter Rogers production. Here are a handful of my favorite movies starring Sylvia Syms.
