Héctor Juan Pérez Martnez, better known by his stage name Héctor Lavoe, was a Puerto Rican salsa singer who lived from September 30, 1946, to June 29, 1993.

In the history of salsa music, he is regarded as arguably the greatest and most influential singer. Throughout the 70s and 80s, he enjoyed a tremendous artistic career in the fields of Latin music and salsa thanks to his charisma, sense of style, and vocal abilities.

Was Hector Lavoe addicted?

Lavoe was seriously addicted to heroin and prescription pills. His addiction got worse when his fame started growing. He started acting very unprofessional and sometimes refused to show up for arranged gigs.

During the latter parts of his years on earth, he sought help from a spiritualist to rid him of his drug addiction.

A string of tragic events haunted his life after his so-called rehabilitation. Héctor Lavoe Jr., his son, was slain by a friend hours before his show in Puerto Rico, which had been postponed because of low ticket sales.

In the same time frame, a fire completely damaged his Rego Park, Queens, apartment.
