U.S. Soccer reported that prominent American soccer writer Grant Wahl passed away on Friday while covering the World Cup in Qatar. Prior to joining Substack, Wahl covered the growth of the sport for Sports Illustrated for many years.
On Friday in Lusail, Wahl attended the Argentina vs. Netherlands quarterfinal game. At the beginning of extra time, he passed out in his seat. According to Washington Post reporter Steven Goff, who was also covering the match, numerous reporters phoned for assistance, and paramedics quickly responded and treated Wahl on-site for a number of minutes.
“The entire U.S. Soccer family is heartbroken to learn that we have lost Grant Wahl,” U.S. Soccer wrote in a statement. “Fans of soccer and journalism of the highest quality knew we could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game, and its major protagonists: teams, players, coaches, and the many personalities that make soccer, unlike any sport.”

All through Friday’s triumph for Argentina, Wahl tweeted commentary. After the Netherlands tied the game late in the second half, he sent his final tweet. “Just an incredibly designed set-piece goal by the Netherlands,” Wahl stated
