Just days after turning 79, New Orleans music icon Walter “Wolfman” Washington passed away from cancer.

For decades, he was a mainstay of the city’s musical nightlife.

Washington passed away on December 22 at Passages Hospice, according to The Times-Picayune and The New Orleans Advocate.

Funeral services will be held at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home on January 4 at 2 p.m. On January 8, a concert at the music venue Tipitina’s will serve as a fundraiser to help with medical and funeral costs.

The newspaper claimed that Washington and his group, the Roadmasters, combined blues, R&B, funk, and soul while giving tunes his trademark howl.

According to the newspaper, in the 2005 New Orleans music documentary “Make It Funky!” by director Michael Murphy, guitarist Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones pays homage to guitarist George Washington.
