Walter Mears was an American reporter who died on Thursday, March 3, 2022.

Mears was born in Lynn, Massachusetts and raised in Lexington. His father was a chemical business CEO.

In 1956, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Middlebury College in Vermont and joined the Associated Press in Boston within a week.

He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1977 for his coverage of the election in which Democrat Jimmy Carter upset incumbent President Gerald R. Ford.

For The Associated Press, he wrote presidential campaign news with fluidity and quickness for 45 years.

Mears’ ability to capture the core of a story while it was still unfolding and get it to the wire and then to newspapers and broadcasters all around the world was legendary among his colleagues.

He was 87.

Mears died at his apartment in North Carolina, 8 days after being diagnosed with multiple forms of cancer.

He could not beat it at his age.
