Yidana Zakaria, the regional minister for the North East, has alluded to the possibility of more police troop deployments in the area as a means of addressing the rising number of robbery incidents in Walewale and the surrounding areas.
The new agreement with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), according to the Minister, comes after the robbery attack on Monday that left one person dead and eight others injured.
Following his visit with the survivors of the Tamale Teaching Hospital heist, the Regional Minister promised a swift search and arrest of the perpetrators.
“If armed robbery is the case, then they have committed much more than what is considered armed robbery.” She continued, “It was essentially a planned assault on the populace.
Three armed individuals are believed to have carried out the attack. They allegedly arrived on motorbikes, opened fire at a crowded bus terminal close to the Nalerigu Junction, and then targeted a mobile money vendor.
Eight other people were injured by stray gunfire at the bus terminal, and the vendor was shot as he tried to escape.
After being taken to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, all of the casualties were evacuated to the Walewale Government Hospital.
But at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the mobile money provider known as Rabiu was pronounced deceased.
The event follows an increase in robbery reports throughout the municipality. Since 2021, the municipality has had about thirty robbery assaults, according to police sources.
