Laryea Kingston has stepped down as the head coach of the Black Starlets following their disappointing loss to Burkina Faso in the WAFU U17 Cup of Nations semifinals. The former Ghana international made the decision after the team conceded two goals due to poor defending, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.
In a press conference after the match, Laryea revealed that he had actually made the decision to resign months ago. As a result, his assistant coaches, Jacob Nettey and Nana Agyemang, will lead the team in the third-place playoff match against Nigeria on Tuesday.
The Ghana Football Association released a statement acknowledging Laryea’s departure and confirming that his assistants will take charge of the remaining game in the tournament. The statement also mentioned that the Technical Director of the GFA will provide support to the assistant coaches for the upcoming match.
Unfortunately, Ghana’s loss to Burkina Faso means that they will not qualify for the U17 AFCON for the third consecutive time. Despite the disappointment, the Black Starlets will look to end their campaign on a high note against Nigeria in the third-place playoff.
