A former Headmaster of Sprinkles of God SHS in Kintampo, Joseph B. Y. Dery, has been arrested by the internal security of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) alongside the Kintampo Police Command for alleged fraudulent activities related to the WASSCE (SC) 2024 registration.

Mr. Dery, who previously served as the Assistant Supervisor for the WASSCE (SC) 2019 at Centre College, was apprehended based on accusations of deceiving the public through deceptive registration practices.

According to John Kapi, the Head of the Public Relations unit of WAEC, Mr. Dery applied for centre status for the WASSCE (SC) 2024 on February 15, 2024. However, his application was denied due to a late submission. Despite not receiving approval from the council, Mr. Dery utilized social media and other platforms to attract prospective examination candidates to register for the WASSCE (SC) 2024.

Victims were misled into believing that they were registering at an official examination center, with Mr. Dery charging each individual an amount ranging from GH¢1,000 to GH¢3,400. Investigations have revealed that Mr. Dery failed to capture the images or fingerprints of the candidates during the registration process, despite collecting payments.

Furthermore, WAEC has issued a caution to the public, emphasizing that the WASSCE (SC) is exclusively for final year Senior High School students. The council warned against registering for the examination if individuals are not in a regular school setting. Such schools, labeled as “banner schools,” are being scrutinized for their practices of enrolling unqualified candidates at exorbitant fees.

WAEC has vowed to identify and hand over anyone found engaging in illegal registration activities to the police. Any candidates found to be unqualified for the examination due to deceptive registration practices will have their registrations annulled.

The council encourages parents, guardians, and prospective candidates to verify the authenticity of the registration centers before enrolling for the WASSCE (SC) to prevent falling victim to fraudulent schemes like the one orchestrated by Mr. Dery.
