Julius Odoi Amesimeku, the Volta Revival Foundation’s country manager, has disclosed that in 2023, his non-governmental organization (NGO) successfully rescued fifteen trafficked children who were involved in child labor at Yeji and Akosombo.
The 15 minors, who were natives of the Ada-Foah, Wekumagbe, Azizanya, and Totimekorpey districts in the Ada-East and West regions, were discovered to be employed for fishing and animal herding activities by the non-governmental organization (NGO), whose operations were focused around Ada in the Greater Accra Region.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Amesimeku stated that the Foundation had subsequently made amends with the kids’ families and made sure they were immediately reenrolled in school.
He stated that the Foundation’s goal was to eradicate all types of child maltreatment in the area.
About fifty-five children from the same districts have been saved, rehabilitated, and reintegrated by the Foundation with assistance from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
According to Mr. Amesimeku, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has designated a few Ada settlements as “hotbeds” for the trafficking of minors to the Volta Lake for fishing.
He urged the government to put in place a robust system of family and community child protection for kids.
