On Sunday, a bomb detonated in a St Petersburg cafe, killing Russian military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky and injuring 30 others.
On Sunday evening, Tatarsky spoke to a crowd of approximately 100 people at an event organized by an organization called “Cyber Z Front,” the name of which corresponds to the letter “Z” that Russia has adopted as a symbol of the battle. According to Russian news reports, the explosion occurred several minutes after a woman identified as Nastya presented Tatarsky with a bust made of gold.
However, Darya Trepova, a 26-year-old woman from St Petersburg, was arrested on Monday, according to Russia’s state Investigative Committee. The interior ministry had previously placed her on its wanted list but provided no additional information about her.
Meanwhile, Tatarsky was the country’s second high-profile war propagandist slain since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Darya Dugina, the journalist daughter of a renowned ultra-nationalist official, was killed last August by a car bomb in Moscow.
The assassination is a strike on Russia’s extreme pro-war camp, and it serves as a reminder to other members of this group that they could be attacked anywhere.
Tatarsky had survived numerous reporting visits to the front lines of the war but was slain hundreds of kilometers distant, in the heart of Russia’s second citadel.
