Van Conner was born on March 17, 1967, in the United States. He is most well-known for his work as Screaming Trees’ bassist.
While he was still a high school bass player, Conner, his brother Gary Lee Conner, and Mark Pickerel formed the band Explosive Generation. Screaming Trees was formed when singer Mark Lanegan joined that band in 1985. The band moved to Seattle from Ellensburg, Washington, in the late 1980s in order to participate in the growing alternative rock scene there. Conner made guest appearances on seven studio albums prior to the Screaming Trees split in 2000.
While Conner was a member of Screaming Trees, he started the side project Solomon Grundy, in which he sang lead vocals and played guitar. In 1990, when Dinosaur Jr. released an album, Conner also joined the live lineup. Gardener, a subsequent side project that he started, released an album in 1999. After Screaming Trees broke up, Conner started VALIS and Musk Ox, two more alternative rock bands, as well as working as a session musician.
