Valentine’s Day: Souvenir vendors lament low patronage

Valentine’s Day is an important day for individuals and families to commemorate and reiterate their love, friendship, and respect for one another.

In Ghana, chocolates, flower bouquets, and other gifts of affection are usually exchanged on this special day.

Emmanuel Bright Quaicoe of JoyNews chatted with a few Kumasi locals who shared their opinions on this custom.

One person remarked, “I don’t really care about Valentine’s Day; if you love someone, you should give them presents on a regular basis.”

One more said, “We have overrated it in fact.” Right now, look around the street; nobody seems to care about anything.

Valentine’s Day vendors in Kumasi saw a decline in sales as few customers bought anything.

According to Emmanuel Bright Quaicoe, the reason for the decline in sales was a decline in interest in commemorating the day.

Being a hawker, Regina expressed her dismay as the day went on despite her optimism for an increase in sales from vehicles and passengers.

“The market has been slow; they bought quite a few yesterday [Tuesday], but this morning has not shown any signs of improvement.”
