The Keta Municipal Health directorate, which houses a vaccine storage facility, is at risk of losing essential vaccines after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected power to the facility.
The nationwide revenue mobilization exercise by the power distributor aims to recover over 6 billion cedis from its debtors, including private companies, state institutions, and residential properties.
Despite the government classifying health facilities such as vaccine stores as essential and strategic, power outages continue to occur, posing a threat to the quality of vaccines, including the recently received vaccines to prevent three childhood killer diseases.
Earlier in the week, Fabrimetal Company was also disconnected by the ECG over a GH₵28 million whooping sum debt after an inconclusive engagement with management. The ECG maintains that it will not spare any entity that has failed to pay bills, as it owes its power producers over $5 billion.
The disconnection of power to the Keta Municipal Health directorate has sparked fears among the residents of Keta, who rely on the vaccines to protect their health. The situation calls for urgent action to prevent the loss of essential vaccines and ensure the uninterrupted supply of power to health facilities.
