As a result of Boris Johnson’s resignation announcement, a leadership election will now be held to choose the next Conservative leader and prime minister.
UK Prime Minister role: Who will replace Boris Johnson?
The final two candidates will be put to a vote by Conservative members, therefore they will need to win the support of Conservative MPs.
Though the majority of these MPs and ministers have not yet declared their interest in becoming the Tory leader and prime minister, they are the ones to keep an eye on.
There may be further witnesses.
Among Tory party members, Ben Wallace appears to be the front-runner to succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister and party leader.
Ben Wallace was barely ahead of Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt in a YouGov survey of 716 Conservative party members.
Candidates must receive the backing of eight Conservative MPs in order to run under the existing regulations.
Conservative MPs hold a series of votes until only two candidates are left if there are more than two.
The winner is then decided by a vote of the entire Conservative party membership.
