President Nana Akufo-Addo has been honored with an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), a prestigious recognition that highlights his dedication to the development of education in Ghana.
The award was presented to the President during a special congregation at the commissioning of the second phase of the University’s main campus in Ho. This $60 million project, which was spearheaded by President Akufo-Addo, will facilitate the expansion of the health-focused University, established in 2011 under Parliamentary ACT 828.
The Chairman of the University Governing Council, Justice Mr. Victor Jones Mawulorm Dotse, commended the President for his continuous support towards the project, including cutting the sod for the China Aid Phase Two in September 2021. The Council Chairman emphasized the President’s unwavering commitment to the University, which has been demonstrated through his frequent visits and support.
During the ceremony, Professor Lydia Aziato, the Vice Chancellor of UHAS, highlighted the significance of the campus expansion project, which is expected to accommodate over 2,000 additional students. The President was lauded for his exemplary leadership in promoting science education and making it more accessible to Ghanaian families, particularly through the implementation of the Free Senior High School Policy in 2017.
The special congregation was attended by various dignitaries from the political and academic sectors, as well as former heads of the University and traditional leaders. President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude for the recognition, attributing the success of the Free SHS initiative to the collective efforts of his administration and the support of all Ghanaians.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his administration’s commitment to STEM education and emphasized the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure. He pledged continued support to UHAS and donated laptops and desktop computers to enhance the University’s administrative operations.
The completion and commissioning of the phase two campus development mark a significant milestone in Ghana-China relations and exemplify the government’s focus on promoting education and healthcare in the country. The project includes modern academic and administrative facilities, a state-of-the-art simulation center, and a lecture hall complex, positioning UHAS as a leading health training institution in Africa.
