The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, recently commissioned an ultra-modern Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP) and Medical Waste Treatment facility in Kperiha, near Wa, in the Upper West Region. This facility has an impressive capacity to process 400 tons of municipal solid waste per day, catering to the waste management needs of Wa and the entire Upper West Region.
In addition to managing municipal solid waste, the Centralized Medical Waste Treatment Facility will be responsible for handling hazardous healthcare waste including used syringes, blood-stained materials, pathological waste, Covid-19 waste, and waste from vaccination exercises. This initiative is part of a collaboration between the government and Jospong Group of Companies to build 16 IRECOP facilities in all 16 regions and 14 medical waste treatment facilities.
Beyond waste management, these new facilities are expected to create over 1000 direct jobs and significantly improve the environmental conditions of the region. The commissioning of these ultra-modern facilities signifies a step towards a healthier environment, improved health conditions for residents, enhanced living conditions, and a reduction in air, water, and land pollution. The impact of these projects will be felt across the region, contributing to a cleaner and healthier future for all.
