During a traffic stop on January 7, 2023, five Black Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers beat Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, severely. Nichols passed away three days after being admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
According to the officers, Nichols was stopped for reckless driving. They used a taser and pepper spray on him after they removed him from his vehicle. Nichols was able to escape during the incident. When the officers got close to Nichols, they beat him for about three minutes, hitting him in the head with punches and kicks and hitting him on the back with a baton while they held him down.
The five officers were terminated on January 20 after investigations were initiated by both the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice. “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating” were the preliminary findings of an autopsy ordered by Nichol’s family and released on January 23.
On January 26, the five officers were taken into custody and accused of murder, kidnapping, assault, and misconduct. Because they didn’t do a good enough patient assessment of Nichols, three firefighters, two emergency medical technicians, and a lieutenant who were on the scene were let go and fired. Later, two more police officers were let go of their duties.
