Residents of Maitama, Abuja, have voiced concerns about what they described as an explosion nearby. Some inhabitants of X reported in multiple tweets yesterday that the sound came from a local waste site.
As per Serah Ibrahim, an X user, “Maitama, Abuja is rocked by an explosion today.” Today there was an explosion in Maitama, Abuja. It was said that the explosion occurred not far from a landfill for waste. It might be related to a potential gas leak at the waste disposal site.The explosion was verified not to have been caused by a bomb.
However, the FCT Police Command claimed that when refuse evacuators went there to remove refuse, an overheated refuse container activated by strong heat was what caused the explosion.
In a public update on the incident, Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh stated: “Members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and a rapid response team were deployed to assess the situation when it occurred.”
According to preliminary findings, two waste disposal personnel who are currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital were injured when a metal garbage container that had overheated and been activated by tremendous heat burst.
The FCT Police Command cautions the public and suggests using rubber or plastic containers instead of overheated metal discard containers when disposing of waste since these offer a lower chance of mishaps.
