Two civilians have tragically lost their lives after a violent attack on the Tema Naval Base of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The Ghana Armed Forces released a statement on April 13 detailing the events that led to the deaths of the civilians.
According to the statement, a crowd attending a festival in Tema Newtown attacked a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy at around 7:53 pm on Friday. The crowd damaged the vehicle and injured three naval personnel who were onboard.
The injured officers were taken to the Tema Naval Base Medical Centre for treatment. Subsequently, three suspects were apprehended by the naval personnel and handed over to the Tema Newtown District Police for further investigation.
A separate group suspected to be associated with the festival then launched a second attack on the naval base, throwing stones and other objects. The motive behind this attack was believed to be an attempt to release the arrested individuals.
In response to the threat posed by the attack, the naval base security fired warning shots to deter the assailants and protect the base’s sensitive installations. Unfortunately, two individuals were reported dead and taken to the Tema General Hospital. The cause of their deaths is still under investigation.
The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. The findings of the investigation will be disclosed in due course.
