McBride attended Fort Morgan High School, where he played baseball, basketball, and football. He was named Class 3A All-Colorado as a junior after catching 32 passes for 751 yards and 11 touchdowns. As a senior, he was named All-Colorado after rushing for 226 yards, catching 30 passes for 450 yards, and scoring four touchdowns while also recording 40 tackles and one sack on defense.

McBride, a three-star recruit according to 247Sports out of high school, chose Colorado State over offers from Colorado, Cal, Kansas State, Navy, Northern Colorado, and Wyoming.
McBride appeared in all 12 of Colorado State’s games as a freshman, starting five of them. He had seven receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown. McBride was also named Academic All-Mountain West and first-team Academic All-Colorado by the National Football Foundation’s Colorado Chapter. After completing his first full season as a starter with 45 receptions for 560 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore, McBride was named first-team All-Mountain West Conference. On November 29, 2019, McBride faced Boise State and had 9 catches for 101 yards, marking his first 100-yard receiving game.
