Moehrig ran track and played cornerback for the Rangers while attending Smithson Valley High School in Spring Branch, Texas, a city north of San Antonio. He tweeted his commitment to play collegiate football at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, before the start of his senior year.

When Moehrig switched to safety as a true freshman at TCU in 2018, he had a quick impact, started two defense games, and was voted the Horned Frogs’ Special Teams MVP for the season. He started every game as a sophomore in 2019 and was second on the team in tackles and interceptions with 62. He was named to the Big 12’s first team after the season.
Prior to Moehrig’s junior year in 2020, the Walter Camp Football Foundation named him a preseason All-American, Pro Football Focus labeled him the top returning safety in the country, and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football named him the best defensive back in Texas.
