About her siblings, Tress MacNeille has not made any disclosures. She grew up loving cartoons and wanted to be a voice actress since she was eight years old, but she opted for a “realistic” career since she believed she would never be able to fulfill her dream.

Her career as a disc jockey began after she earned her degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and broadcasting school.

Before landing a regular position on an animated TV show, MacNeille held a variety of occupations and had countless small voiceover appearances.

She said: “For around two years, I had been doing radio spots, some TV, demos, sound-alikes, industrial narrations, whatever that came my way.” She spent eleven years as a member of the improv comedy troupe The Groundlings.

In what she refers to as “The University of Voice-over,” MacNeille attended acting classes and assisted casting director Bob Lloyd. MacNeille’s first animated television appearance was thanks to Lloyd and fellow agent Rita Vennari, who landed her a part in a Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo episode from 1979.
