Smith announced his decision to forego his remaining eligibility and enter the 2018 NFL Draft via his Twitter account on January 6, 2018. Smith accepted his invitation to participate in the Senior Bowl on January 10, 2018. Smith was eligible to play despite being a redshirt junior because he had already graduated. Smith had a good week of practice at the Senior Bowl and was able to keep his draft stock up. Smith caught five passes for 83 yards and scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike White to help the North defeat the South 45-16 on January 27, 2018.
Smith participated in the Indianapolis NFL Scouting Combine and finished all of the positional drills. Of all the athletes who competed, he had the third-best broad jump and the 14th-best time in the 40-yard dash. He took part in Central Florida’s pro day on March 29, 2018, but he decided to stand on his combined numbers and only do positional drills. Smith participated in a private workout with the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith was predicted by NFL draft experts and scouts to be selected in the third or fourth round at the conclusion of the pre-draft process.
