His great-great-great-grandfather on his mother’s side was Senator William Henry Barnum of Connecticut. Senator Barnum was a third cousin of the showman P. T. Barnum. In addition, Williams is a distant relative of Robert Treat Pain. Paine was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence and was a Founding Father of the United States.
Growing up, he attended the Kent School in Connecticut, where he played football. After he graduated from high school, he enrolled at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania.
