The Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) has welcomed the recent directive from the Ministry of Transport regarding the monitoring of commercial drivers who impose new transport fares beyond the current ones. The GPRTU views this move as a step towards regulating the system and ensuring that proper procedures are followed.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Transport in Accra on Sunday, discussions for new public transport fares are still ongoing with Road Transport Operators due to the recent increase in fuel prices and other operational costs. The Ministry has instructed the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to be vigilant and take action against any commercial driver who defies the existing public transport fares set by the GPRTU of TUC and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, expressed his belief that the Ministry’s directive is aimed at facilitating the correct procedure and ensuring total order in the system. He emphasized that negotiations are still ongoing and that all stakeholders are working towards resolving the issue amicably.
In light of these developments, it is important for commercial drivers to comply with the existing public transport fares and avoid imposing new fares on commuters. Those who fail to adhere to this directive will face the full force of the law. This is a critical time for all parties involved to come together and work towards a solution that benefits both drivers and passengers alike.
