The cost of using public transportation will rise by 30% starting on January 22, 2024. The increase is the result of a “substantial rise in the costs of lubricants and spare parts, coupled with increment on DVLA service charges,” according to a press release from the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana.
The organization said that this has a significant impact on the livelihoods of its members. The transport operators bemoaned the exorbitant expenses associated with upkeep and repairs.
The press release from the commercial transport operators stated that the proposal for a fare increase intends to solve the financial issues faced by the drivers and ensure the survival of the public transportation industry in Ghana.
On Monday, January 22, 2024, the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana would like to announce a 30% increase in transportation fares across the nation.
This is now required since the cost of lubricants and spare parts has increased dramatically, along with the DVLA service charge, severely impacting the incomes of drivers throughout Ghana.
As costs have been rising, it has been harder for those of us in the public transit industry to continue operating.
The ongoing increase in lubricant costs, which is a consequence of the volatility of the world’s oil markets, has placed a heavy burden on drivers whose cars operate on oil.
Furthermore, we are no longer able to maintain our vehicles to their best potential due to the rising costs of spare components, especially for maintenance and repairs.
This has had a detrimental effect on drivers as well as the general population who commute by increasing downtime and decreasing operational efficiency.
Higher taxes in Ghana are creating financial difficulties for transport companies, making it harder for them to pay overhead and provide for their families. Following stakeholder talks, including state agencies, the Transport Operators Association suggests raising fares to alleviate drivers’ financial hardships and maintain the public transportation sector.
The goal of the modification is to preserve service effectiveness and quality, which will help drivers and other commuters. The Association highlights the necessity for a well-rounded strategy that takes into account drivers’ needs while maintaining accessible and reasonably priced transit.
They want to create a sustainable transportation industry, and they are dedicated to providing safe and effective services. They will enlist the help of all relevant parties. They also allude to a possible fare hike of 30% if parliament approves the proposed environmental tax.
