Jones was born in San Saba, Texas, on September 15, 1946. His father, Clyde C. Jones, was a rancher and an oil field worker, while his mother, Lucille Marie was a police officer, educator, and owner of a beauty parlor.

The two were married twice before divorcing. Tommy has claimed to be partially Cherokee. He was born and raised in Midland, Texas, where he also went to what was then known as Robert E. Lee High School.

Jones soon relocated to Dallas and completed his studies at the St. Mark’s School of Texas in 1965.
