A journalist, author, and musician from South Africa named Todd Matshikiza lived from 1920 to 1968. He is most known for writing the music for the 1960 South African musical drama King Kong, which is regarded as one of the best composed.

Matshikiza was born into a musical family in Queenstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. His father played the organ, while his mother sang soprano. Matshikiza was a skilled accordionist and pianist.

After finishing high school, Matshikiza enrolled in Lovedale College to get a teaching degree. Following graduation, he worked as an English and math teacher in high schools in Johannesburg and Alice.
