Unguwar Tandu hamlet, located in the Karu local government region of Nasarawa State, experienced tragedy when three individuals who were loading and excavating sand were buried alive. Mohammed Nasir lived, while Dauda Umaru, Abdullahi Ayawa, and Zakari Musa perished.

Three people died in the incident, according to Aminu Sunusi, deputy head of the Union of Tipper and Quarry Employers, while one person survived and is presently being treated at a hospital that has not been named.

“The body was buried under a layer of sand that had slipped and covered them when they were digging sand at the Unguwar Tandu location, a few kilometers from Keffi in the Karu local government.

“After hiring an excavator, the victims’ dead bodies were subsequently recovered.”
The retrieved remains had been buried according to Islamic customs, according to Sunusi, who called the occurrence the most terrible and unfortunate event in the history of mining operations in Unguwar Tandu village.

Two employees expressed their shock at the tragedy, as did a family member of one of the deceased who survived the incident. Aruwa Maikasuwa, the father of one of the deceased, and Mohammed Nasir, a survivor, both stated that they are still processing the tragic incident.

When asked if any government representatives had visited the community or the scene of the incident, a state fire service official, who was speaking under anonymity, replied that no government official had visited either location.

At the time of the press release, attempts were made to get statements on the occurrence from the state Ministry of Environment and Solid Mineral Resources or the police.
