Three people have tragically lost their lives in a road accident that occurred on the Aseseaso-Somanya-Trom road in the Eastern Region.

The accident took place on Monday, April 22, 2024, when a Toyota minivan with registration number GT 5990-21, traveling from Accra to Kpong, veered off the road and somersaulted into a bush while descending the Aseseaso curvy mountain.

Following the accident, several people sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Koforidua Central Hospital. The passengers trapped in the vehicle were rescued by the diligent efforts of Police, Fire, and Ambulance Service personnel and were taken to the Atua Government Hospital and Yilo Krobo District Hospital for medical attention.

Unfortunately, two individuals lost their lives on the spot, while a third person succumbed to their injuries at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital. Dr. Francesca Mensah Darkwah, the Medical Director of the hospital, confirmed the casualties and revealed that five victims with severe head injuries, major limb fractures, and other critical conditions have been referred to the Koforidua Central Hospital for further treatment.

In response to the tragic incident, Dr. Darkwah emphasized the importance of road safety and urged drivers to rest when feeling tired to prevent accidents in the future. She stressed the significance of prioritizing life and advised motorists to avoid speeding while passengers should intervene if they notice the driver is speeding.

The Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident to determine whether it was due to brake failure, driver fatigue, or speeding on the mountainous and curvy road. The recent re-coating of the Aseseaso-Somanya road has led to an increased traffic congestion, prompting many motorists to use this alternative route, which may have contributed to the accident.

Among the deceased are a female teacher, the driver’s mate on the minivan, and a third unidentified individual. Their bodies have been transported to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital mortuary as investigations continue into this tragic incident.
