Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel have split after the Blues’ 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in their Champions League opener on Tuesday night and a sluggish start to the Premier League season.
After winning three trophies in 20 months, the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain manager is leaving.
Tuchel’s coaching staff has been placed in interim control by owner Todd Boehly until a replacement is identified.
According to a club statement, the owners thought it was “the proper moment” to hire a new head coach.
According to BBC Sport, the decision would have been made regardless of Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.
Chelsea is sixth in the Premier League with three victories, one tie, and two losses.
Their new ownership supervised a £255.3 million summer spending binge, estimated to be a British record, bringing in seven new players.
Despite the investment, the club’s record has been inconsistent, and Tuchel has been critical of his players on occasion.
Tuchel is said to have recently lost the trust of both the team and the board, and to have become less communicative with both groups.
