France’s Paris is where Levet was born. He became a professional in 1988, and that year he won the French PGA Championship. He initially joined the European Tour in 1991 and played there for the following six seasons, dividing time with the PGA Tour in 1994.
In 1996, he played on the European Tour just three times and was demoted to the lower-level Challenge Tour. By winning the Cannes Open in April 1998, a tournament he had acquired entry to through the French Golf Federation, he was able to reclaim his European Tour card.
He was second out of four players in a playoff at The Open Championship at Muirfield in 2002. He stood an excellent chance of winning, but he bogeyed the last hole of the four-hole playoff, forcing a sudden-death match with Ernie Els, who eventually defeated him after a second bogey.
