On December 3, 1905, Thomas Francis Murphy was born in Manhattan, New York City. Murphy graduated from Regis High School before earning his Artium Baccalaureus from Georgetown University in 1927.
He got his Bachelor of Laws from Fordham University School of Law in 1930. He had to wait until 1942 to start practicing law on a private basis.
Murphy worked as an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1942 to 1950. In 1944, he was appointed head of the criminal division. From 1949 to 1950, he worked as a prosecutor in Alger Hiss’s two perjury trials, gaining a conviction in the second trial following the first’s hung jury.
Murphy was referred to as “a lifetime Democrat” at the time. His younger brother Johnny Murphy played pitcher for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. He also served as general manager of the New York Mets throughout the course of a lengthy professional baseball career. On October 26, 1995, Murphy passed away at a Salisbury, Connecticut care home at the age of 88.
