French fashion icon Thierry Mugler has died. He died Sunday, January 23, 2022, at the age of 73.

His manager Jean-Baptiste Rougeot confirmed the news on social media, saying: “The artist Manfred Thierry Mugler has passed away at age 73 on Sunday, January 22nd, 2022 in Vincennes (France) from natural causes.

Born in Strasbourg (France), artist at heart from an early age, he initially devoted himself to dance by becoming a member of the ballet of the Opera du Rhin (Strasbourg). Moving to Paris, he was immediately noticed for his incredible look and already a unique hand for drawing.

In a few days, he sells his creations to Parisian ready-to-wear houses. His destiny had just changed, and his rise will then be meteoric.

He designed a first line called ‘Café de Paris’ in 1973 and in 1974 created the Maison ‘Thierry Mugler’ with Alain Caradeuc, his first partner. Didier Grumbach joined them a few years later and accompanied the house to its heights. He calls on Michel Douard who will take over the general management of the brand.

The Thierry Mugler house, through its ready-to-wear and haute couture, revolutionized fashion codes for more than three decades to glorify an enhancement of femininity.

Each artistic field was for him a tool for the realization of his dreams. He is a rare creator to carry out his own advertising campaigns and artistic photos on all continents. He tackles the direction of short films and will create the famous music video “Too Funky” by George Michael.

He will shake up the world of perfumery in 1992 by creating, with the Clarins group, his first perfume: ‘Angel’. Worldwide success still undeniable to this day. The L’Oreal group will acquire the house in 2021.

After realizing his absolute dreams by creating haute couture collections in the mid-90s, he decided to leave fashion in the early 2000s to devote himself to directing.

He will carry out the ‘I am…’ world tour of the singer Beyonce, he will collaborate with the Cirque du Soleil for their only adults show ‘Zumanity’ in Las Vegas.

Then he will create the revue ‘Mugler Follies’ in Paris and ‘The Wyld’ in Berlin.

More recently, he accepted for the first time to be dedicated to an exhibition with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Thierry Mugler: Couturissime, has achieved worldwide success and is currently displayed at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

He produced a monograph of his photographic works as the ultimate testimony of a unique eye on the world: Manfred Thierry Mugler Photographer.

‘I have dedicated my life to the most beautiful ‘animal’ on earth: the human being. I know beauty can save the world.’ – Manfred Thierry Mugler

May his soul rests in peace. His star will shine forever among those he admired so much in his childhood when he watched the sky of Strasbourg, lying on a bench.

A communication about his funeral will be made later in agreement with his family,” the statement added.

Mugler launched his eponymous fashion house; and quickly rose to prominence in the following decades for his avant-garde, architectural, hyperfeminine, and theatrical approach to haute couture in the 1970s.

And in 2002, he retired from the brand and returned in 2013 as the creative adviser.

At the beginning of his career, he designed signature looks for David Bowie and Diana Ross, and most notably Demi Moore’s dress from the 1993 movie Indecent Proposal, which was once coined “the most famous dress of the 1990s”.
