There will be a new approach to sports funding by my government – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s Vice President and Flagbearer, has stated that his administration will significantly increase sports funding to ensure that Ghana meets modern sports development requirements.

Dr. Bawumia addressed Ghanaians on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, to unveil his vision for Ghana, stating that Ghanaian sports have not reached their full potential due to insufficient and unsustainable funding.

“Sports is a multi-million dollar industry and an enabler for the youth,” he continued. “However, we have not realized our full sports potential, and we cannot maximize the full potential of Ghana sports with the same funding module we have operated with since independence.”

As part of his new vision for sports development as President, Dr. Bawumia said that he “will have a major focus on policies, taxes, and other incentives to increase private and public investment” to address it and guarantee Ghana Sports’ success.

“My government will therefore prioritize the creation of incentives for corporate sponsorship as a sustainable module for financing sports development and promotion for our national teams, including football, athletics, and boxing at all levels.”

“This will take the financial pressure off the government and also enable the government to redirect more support to other sports disciplines.”

Dr. Bawumia went on to say that the government will direct more funds toward grassroots development by creating the School Sports Secretariat, an organization under the Ministry of Sports that will promote grassroots sports in schools in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and sports federations. This new funding module will support the various federations’ activities.
