Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye goes by the moniker “The Weeknd.” Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born in Toronto, Ontario. His sole parents were Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, immigrants from Ethiopia who got divorced not long after he was born. His mother and grandmother raised him in the Scarborough area.

His songs frequently explore themes of escape, romanticism, and grief and are inspired by his own life. His gloomy poetry and use of sound are highly renowned.

He has won numerous awards, including four Grammys, a Latin Grammy Award, 20 Billboard Music Awards, 17 Juno Awards, six American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and nominations for the Academy Award and Primetime Emmy Award.

Esfaye began his career on YouTube in 2009 by uploading music under a false name. Two years later, he co-founded the XO record label and put out the mixtapes Thursday, House of Balloons, and Echoes of Silence. His unconventional and contemporary R&B music, as well as the secrecy surrounding his identity, gained him renown thanks to these cassettes.
