The flooding situation in Kumasi could worsen – NADMO

With the rainy season approaching, concerns have been raised about the potential for worsening flooding in parts of Kumasi.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has pointed out that the indiscriminate construction on waterways poses a significant threat to managing the recurrent flooding in the area.

Last year, the Ashanti Region experienced devastating floods that claimed more than ten lives and destroyed many livelihoods, leaving victims struggling to recover. Despite efforts to desilt drainages and implement other preventive measures, the impact of the rains seemed more severe than in previous years.

This year, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has already predicted heavier rains, heightening fears of a possible disaster. NADMO has expressed concerns that if individuals continue to build on waterways and wetlands, the consequences of the rains could be dire.

Frank Duodu, the Ashanti Regional NADMO Coordinator, highlighted the alarming rate of encroachment on buffer zones and wetlands in the region, leading to a lack of proper water retention areas in Kumasi. He emphasized the need to stop the illegal construction to avoid potential catastrophe.

To address the perennial flooding issues, the government has embarked on the reconstruction of the Atafoa bridge, where multiple lives were lost in previous flooding incidents. Residents are hopeful that the completion of the bridge expansion will mitigate flood risks in the area.

However, residents in flood-prone areas like Aboabo pelele are still grappling with inadequate drainage systems, raising concerns about their safety during the rainy season. They urge authorities to prioritize the expansion of drainage infrastructure to prevent recurring floods that put their lives at risk.

NADMO is working in collaboration with local authorities to demolish structures built on waterways, as part of efforts to minimize the impact of the upcoming heavy rains. The organization is striving to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in flood-prone areas by enforcing regulations against illegal construction practices.
