Former Deputy Chief of Staff and Health Minister, Alex Segbefia, has voiced his concerns about the composition and behavior of the Electoral Commission of Ghana in relation to the missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

In an interview on 3FM’s Sunrise, Segbefia expressed doubts about the impartiality and integrity of the Electoral Commission, suggesting that it is heavily influenced by sympathizers of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The Electoral Commission is filled with NPP apparatchiks. So, anything suspicious creates a problem for us. So, they have to come good,” he stated.

Segbefia went further to cast doubt on the legitimacy of certain commissioners, specifically mentioning Bossman Asare and other appointees whom he accused of having strong ties to the NPP.

He highlighted the conflict of interest he perceives within the Commission, stating, “Here’s a situation where we have a founded position that you are totally NPP. We have all the evidence that you are NPP and you are now a referee. Bossman Asare and all these new people who have been the patrons and things that have been recruited are they all not commissioners? So, you have created a problem already with your appointments, then there’s track record.”

Segbefia also questioned the transparency of the 2020 election results, raising concerns about whether they accurately reflected the will of the people. He emphasized the need for accountability, despite the court’s decision to uphold the election results.

Expressing skepticism towards the Electoral Commission’s handling of electoral processes, Segbefia referenced recent controversies surrounding the loss of BVDs and Laptops, calling for a thorough investigation into such discrepancies.

Furthermore, he expressed disappointment with the National Peace Council’s lack of assertiveness in addressing electoral concerns, suggesting that they should play a more proactive role in safeguarding the electoral process.
