He pioneered the free-form, fly-on-the-wall documentary genre in the United States with films such as The Days Before Christmas (1958), Blood and Fire (1958), Police (1958), and the ground-breaking The Backbreaking Leaf (1959).

Macartney-Filgate directed 31 films for the NFB, the latest of which, the three-part Canada Remembers, was finished in 1995.
