Tenants’ union rebukes Hawa Koomson over rent comment, demands apology

Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, is being demanded by the National Tenants Union of Ghana (NATUG) to apologize for a remark she made to Ghanaians that they claim was offensive.

The demand is in response to something the MP said on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, in an interview with Onua Television.

Hawa Koomson claimed that since rent is more expensive in Canada, Ghanaians should be appreciative of the country’s rent laws.

“People have been complaining that rent in Ghana is expensive,” the speaker stated. Canada is where they ought to go. You pay more than two thousand Canadian dollars a month. That isn’t even for a chamber and hall—that is just for one room.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 22, 2024, the union expressed shock at the Minister’s remarks and called for an apology to Ghanaians.
