A 26-year-old cab driver has been brought before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of stealing a GH₵75,000 Hyundai 110 car.
Kofi Sakyi, often referred to as Isaac or Mosquito entered a not guilty plea to the theft accusation.
Sakyi was remanded into police custody by Mr. Isaac Addo-presiding court, with an appearance date of February 27, 2024.
Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, the prosecutor, stated that Accra New Town is home to the complainant, Fatima Zara Ali, a businesswoman.
Sakyi, according to Chief Inspector Lawer, also lives close to the complainant.
Sakyi contacted the complainant in September 2023. The complainant owns a Hyundai 110 cab worth GH₵75,000 with registration number GS 5447-22.
Sakyi allegedly informed the complainant that he wanted to work because he was unemployed, according to the prosecution.
The prosecutor claimed that Sakyi was given the keys to the car by the complainant, who felt sorry for him and wanted him to start working.
According to the prosecution, Sakyi was entrusted by the complainant to pick up and drop off her child at the Haatso school.
The complainant was expecting Sakyi to drop her daughter off at school on January 21, 2024, but he failed to appear.
Sakyi informed the complainant that he was repairing a mechanical issue that had arisen with the vehicle.
Sakyi’s phone was turned off, according to the prosecution, so the complainant found another method to pick up her child from school.
According to the prosecution, the police received information that Sakyi was hiding in the Central Region’s Agona Kwanyako.
Investigations were expanded to include Agona Kwanyako on January 31, 2024. But it came out that the accused had visited Takoradi and had a hint of police activity.
Based on the information, Sakyi was taken into custody in Agona Swedru on February 5, 2024.
Sakyi denied the offense in his caution statement, claiming he was attacked at Kwame Nkrumah Circle by two unknown individuals who requested him to take them to North Kaneshie.
Sakyi led the police to the scene, but she was unable to pinpoint the precise place where the alleged event had occurred.
