American soul and R&B singer-songwriter Theodore DeReese Pendergrass lived from March 26, 1950, to January 13, 2010.
Kingstree, South Carolina, is where he was born. Pendergrass, who spent the majority of his life in the Philadelphia region, first achieved musical success while serving as the band’s lead singer with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Pendergrass left the band in 1976 and went on to have a successful solo career with the Philadelphia International label, releasing five straight platinum albums (a record at the time for an African-American R&B artist). When Pendergrass was paralyzed from the waist down in an automobile accident in March 1982, his career was put on hold. Up until he announced his retirement in 2007, Pendergrass continued to have success as a solo artist. He passed away in January 2010 due to respiratory failure.
