Ghanaian artist Alapta Wan is advocating for the expansion of the annual ‘Taste of Ghana’ event to include regions beyond Greater Accra.

This government-backed event, organized by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), showcases a wide range of Ghanaian cuisine, music, and other art forms.

With four successful editions under its belt, Taste of Ghana features vendors offering a variety of traditional foods, drinks, clothing, fashion accessories, and artifacts. The event also includes activities such as cooking competitions, fashion shows, concerts, art exhibitions, canopy walks, masquerade performances, and film screenings.

Notable artists like Shatta Wale, R2Bees, EL, Fancy Gadam, and Adina have graced the stage at Taste of Ghana. Alapta Wan, who has also performed at the event, believes that it would benefit the country to rotate the event across different regions.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Alapta Wan expressed her desire for the event to travel to places like Takoradi, highlighting the importance of showcasing Ghanaian culture and cuisine outside of the capital, Accra. As an artist based in Navrongo, she understands the challenges faced by artists outside of the Greater Accra Region, such as limited media platforms and events.

Despite these hurdles, Alapta Wan has managed to create visibility for herself and her music through strategic efforts. She hosts an annual concert called BoombaFest in Navrongo and has released songs like “Africa is Bleeding” and “Bless Me.”

Alapta Wan’s call for the expansion of Taste of Ghana reflects a broader push for cultural appreciation and inclusivity across the country. By bringing this event to different regions, more Ghanaians will have the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the rich tapestry of Ghanaian cuisine and arts.
