The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Pascal-Emmanuel Sinamoyi Tabu, better known by his stage name Tabu Ley Rochereau, was a prominent African rumba singer-songwriter. He was born on November 13, 1940.

Emmanuel Pascal Sinamoyi In what was then the Belgian Congo, Tabu was born in “Bagata”. When he performed with Joseph “Le Grand Kallé” Kabasele and his band L’African Jazz in 1956, his musical career really took off.

He became a full-time musician for the band after graduating from high school.

In 1960, Tabu Ley contributed vocals to the Grand Kallé-penned pan-African smash song Indépendance Cha Cha, which helped the Congo gain its independence from Belgium. Up until 1963, when he and Dr. Nico Kasanda started their own band, African Fiesta, he remained with African Jazz.

The woman who lived all of her life with Rochereau is named Georgette Mowana. Many people, therefore, assume that she goes by Thérèse because of this nickname, which fits her so perfectly and adheres to her skin.

Her real family name, however, is Georgette Mowana. Georgette was born in Katanga, but she is from the old province of Bandundu.

Her father, whose name she bears, is a doctor, thus she comes from a good household. She is the fifth child in her enormous family, according to birth order. In Belgium’s Auderghem-Brussels, she attended the Institut Saint Julien and the Athénée de Kalina to further her education.
