Sylvester James Jr., an American singer-songwriter, was born on September 6, 1947. Letha Weaver, his mother, was of African-American descent and came from a reasonably prosperous family with farms close to Palestine, Arkansas.
Letha’s biological mother, Gertha Weaver, was single and unable to care for her child, therefore Julia, also known as JuJu to the family, was chosen to be Letha’s adoptive mother.
As part of the Great Migration of African-Americans out of the South in the late 1930s, Julia and her husband relocated to Watts. Letha spent the majority of her childhood here, where she also fell in love with Sylvester “Sweet” James and became married to him.
After that, the couple moved into a little cottage with Letha’s parents. Immediately following the birth of their first child, Sylvester, who was given the name of his father, John Wesley and Larry were born in 1948 and 1950, respectively.
In their predominantly African-American neighborhood, Sylvester and his siblings gained further notoriety because to their nickname “Dooni.” Given that he had an adulterous relationship and had left his wife and young sons, Sylvester believed his father to be a “lowlife.”
Letha and her three sons lived in the downtown Aliso Village complex before moving back to her parents’ home on 114th Street in Watts.
