Sir Sydney H. Wylie Samuelson CBE was a British director and cinematographer who lived from 7 December 1925 to 14 December 2022.
Sydney was born in Paddington, London. The UK government nominated him as the initial British Film Commissioner in 1991.
Samuelson was born in Paddington, London, to Marjorie Emma Elizabeth Vint and George Berthold Samuelson, a pioneer of the silent film era in filmmaking. He attended the Irene Avenue Council School in Lancing, West Sussex.
At the Luxor theater in Lancing, West Sussex, Samuelson got his start in the film industry as a rewind boy.
After working as a relief operator for the ABC circuit in numerous theaters in the Midlands, he was hired by Gaumont British, which at the time was located in Lime Grove in London, as a trainee film editor.
